Consulting Services
For filmmakers living outside of the Los Angeles area or who are in need of one-on-one consulting, Jonathan will take you step by step through one of the following three stages of the filmmaking process: Proposal Writing, Story Editing, and Distribution.
Proposal Writing
For many filmmakers, the most difficult aspect of the filmmaking process is writing about their films in an exciting and coherent narrative. And yet, this is essential in order to raise funds, whether from foundations, donors, investors or corporate sponsors. I will guide you through the creation of your entire proposal package, including treatments, budgets and distribution strategies. We will begin by conceptualizing your film, clearly defining character arc, story arc, theme and visual style. We will then write a winning proposal that will not only bring you the support you need but also provide you with a time- and money-saving roadmap to shoot and edit your film.
Story Editing
Many documentary filmmakers encounter story challenges during the editing process. This is caused by a lack of clarity about your story and character arcs and the central premise that holds your film together. I will work with you to establish a rock solid premise, character and story arcs and then go through your entire film, scene by scene, to determine which scenes belong in the film, where they belong, and whether or not the scenes are fulfilling their purpose. Story editing consultations typically last three days, with 5-10 days between consults. A consultation early on in the editing process can save you months in the edit room and tens of thousands of dollars in editor’s fees.
Distribution
Each film has a built-in audience. Together, we will develop a distribution strategy to reach your audience, both out in the world and in academia. For social issue documentaries, we will secure collaborating non-profits already working in the field to help you reach their constituencies. The film will be used not only to educate their audiences about the issue, but will also catalyze action that will further their social change agenda. In academia, there is a surefire way to market to the professors and librarians who are eager to purchase your film for classroom use. I will guide you through that process to maximize your sales and ensure the widest possible visibility for your documentary.
Fees are $150/hour, with a 15% discount when you pre-pay for ten hours or more.
